Innovative gravimetry space mission proposal from Alpbach Summer School 2019

Marcel Stefko, a PhD student from our group, took part in the 2019 edition of the Alpbach Summer School. Over the course of 10 days under the guidance of the scientific and the technical tutors, 4 teams of 15 students each investigated, developed, and presented an innovative space mission proposal, which was then evaluated by experts from the European Space Agency, academic institutions, and industry.

As a member of the Green team, Marcel co-developed the GRAVL (GRAvity observations by Vertical Laser ranging) mission proposal- an ambitious mission combining satellite formations in both low-earth & geostationary orbit, aiming to investigate the Earth’s gravity field with unprecedented accuracy and coverage. Competing with 3 other high-quality proposals, GRAVL was awarded the Best Technical Case award by the jury, and was also selected for further study in November 2019 at an ESA concurrent design facility in Belgium. Congratulations!
